I have often found myself wondering why it is that most people do not believe in the possibility of a true friendship between a man and a woman. I myself have been a good friend to several women throughout the years, and I have enjoyed each and every one of those friendships just as much as I have enjoyed my friendships with men.

So I started to wonder if perhaps people do not know what the qualities of a true friendship really are, and I thought I would write them down.

1. True friendship takes time. Time to get to know each other, time to build shared memories, and time to invest in each other’s lives and growth.

2. Trust is essential in a true friendship. We all require someone with whom we can discuss our deepest thoughts, feelings, and secrets without fear of betrayal. A real friend is someone who we trust with much more than our lives, they are someone that we trust with our very hearts.

3. Genuine friendship supports during times of struggle and is forgiving of all things. True friendship risks, it overlooks faults, and it loves unconditionally, but it also involves being truthful, even though it may hurt, because we always want what is best for our friends.

All of these things make up a true friendship, and I can see no reason why people would think that it is something that a man and a woman could not experience together. On the contrary, I believe that if anyone wants proof that a man and a woman can share such a relationship, then they should take a good look at a happily married couple and they would find just that.
