Grayson’s eyes clouded with hate as he looked at Darius. "I will hunt down your protégés one by one. Until you sicken of it and come out of sanctuary to fight me."
"Would it please you that much to destroy me?"
"Immensely. You could have been one of the greatest rulers in the history of the world. Now you cower on holy ground. You betrayed your army, your friends…"
"That was fourteen hundred years ago. But for you, the world hasn’t changed."
"Look outside your cloister. What has changed? The means of destruction only. You are a fool." **
Darius opened his eyes and spent a moment looking up at the ceiling, pondering the memory that had come to him in a dream. Once, all he had ever wanted was for them to understand that he wasn’t the same person, to accept that, and to simply move on. He had cared a great deal for them before he took the quickening, and that hadn’t changed after, it was simply that he no longer held the same points of view as they did.
Now, the dream caused him to wonder how things would have changed if they had tried to see things differently. Would he still be a priest now, or would he be doing something entirely different? Would they still be close as they had been when they had ravaged Europe? Would Grayson still be alive?
He closed his eyes once again, knowing that those questions would never be answered, and perhaps they were never really meant to be.
