TM ~ Change
Jun. 28th, 2007 07:37 amCurt: We set out to change the world and ending up… just changing ourselves.
Arthur: What's wrong with that?
Curt: Nothing! … If you don't look at the world.
(Todd Haynes, Velvet Goldmine)
There are many people out there who dream about changing the world. They have ambitions of curing cancer, ending hunger, wiping out homelessness, or some other event that would put their mark upon the lives of everyone around them. Those dreams, and others like them, are noble aspirations for anyone to have, and should be sought after by everyone in one way or another. However, so many people dream about the bigger picture, that they can all to often forget that a real change should start from within.
If each of us made a point to change one seemingly small aspect of ourselves, then we could affect the world in ways that we can only dream about now. If we each stopped to give a helping hand or a hot meal to one person in need. If we each took time out of our busy schedules to really notice the people around us, and to talk to them when something seemed to be wrong. If we simply treated everyone around us as though they were our parents, our children, or our best friends.
If we each just took the time to change ourselves, then we wouldn’t have to dream about changing the world, because we would have already done just that. Together.
