I had a feeling something wasn’t quite right from the moment his body fell to the ground in front of me. There was a sense of power gathering that I had never seen or felt before when taking a quickening, and then when it hit me, it drove me to my knees with just the sheer force of it. I knew then that he had been old, older by far than I am even now. When the quickening swept through my body it seemed to seek out every part of me, and I felt this intense pressure in my head as though it was going to simply explode. I found myself screaming from the intensity, and it seemed to go on forever.

When it was finally over I was on my hands and knees with my forehead resting on the ground, and I was not the least bit surprised to see a drop of blood slide from my nose to stain the grass before me. It was then that I realized something was very different. That in the final rush of the quickening, something had happened that sent this wash of feeling through me that I couldn’t begin to explain at first, for it was like nothing I had ever experienced. It was peace.

I found out after the fact that his name had been Emrys, the oldest living among our kind at that time. All that I am today is because of this man, and for him, I am eternally thankful.
