You ask this question as though there was only one who could have possibly ‘gotten away’ from me over the years. Only one who could turn their back on me and walk away without a second glance. Only one who could make me believe that they wanted more from me than they truly did, when in fact I was simply someone that they could use for what they needed for a short time, regardless of what that need might have been.
The real truth of the matter is that there were far too many for me to even begin to count. People that I have taken in over the years who I have tried to show a better way, and who then turned around and used the knowledge that they had gained against me, and against those that I care about.
People like Violane Armand, who Duncan and I tried to help find a better life, away from the world of prostitution. And perhaps I made a mistake when I eventually sent her away to stay with another, but Duncan had left to find his path in the world, and I could not teach Violane what she needed to know to survive. So wanting only to help her, I sent her away to help her find the protection that she would need to survive in a world that did not yet embrace the idea of peace. However, she ran away from there, and returned only to try and kill Duncan, and in return was killed herself.
In the end, I learned that regardless of what I do to try and help those around me, it is they who must decide what to do with the knowledge that I impart. I can only let them go, and hope that they chose to use it wisely.
