410 CE
Pale blue eyes, as cold as ice, carefully studied the plans that had been made for the upcoming battle. The hours progressed slowly through the darkest part of the night and into the early hours of the morning, and still Darius went over the possibilities in his mind. Nothing, not food, or sleep, or the tempting whispers and lingering touches of his chosen mistress could tempt him away. His every thought was focused on what lie ahead, and all of the things that he may have to counter as they fought to take the city.
By the time he stood before his men on the day of battle, Darius had already lived and relived the outcome a dozen or more times. He had all the possible contingencies mapped out in his mind, and where each of his men’s strengths would best be put to use. His whole body radiated determination, and a confidence that the men could see without him having to say a word.
Darius spent several quiet minutes just looking at his troops, his face emotionless as he seemed to study each of them in turn. Then he simply raised one hand, and for just a moment, those in the front could see the passion in his eyes that usually lay hidden below the cold features of his face. And it was then that they knew the time had finally come.
“Today we take Rome. Tomorrow, we take the world.”
