TM ~ What do your ancestors mean to you?
Oct. 26th, 2006 12:58 pmSounds like someone is in need of a bedtime story. Very well than, let’s see what I can remember about my, ‘ancestor’.
Once upon a time there was a group of barbarians living the lives of nomads just East of the Ural Mountains, near what is now Northern Poland. These barbarians were part of a group of people known to history as Goths. Early in the first century, about fifty years after the birth of your Christ, a boy child was discovered and taken into the tribe to be raised as one of their own.
This boy grew to manhood and became one of the best warriors in the tribe, which eventually became part of a distinct group known as the Visigoths. Then one day, near the end of that century, the man was killed in battle. However his time was not yet done according to legend, and he rose again to eventually become a great leader of his people. In fact, he was said by some to be touched by one of the Gods, and that he was granted an extraordinarily long life so that he could aid his people in the claiming of all the land.
And as the centuries past, and the man traveled and learned more about the art of warfare from other tribes in the known world, he became known for his abilities in the area of strategy. Then eventually he did indeed return to his own tribes, forming a warband and becoming a general of his people. Oftentimes in times of war, the man would ally himself and his band with the leader of the Visigoths, Alaric I.
Eventually however, the general decided he needed a kingdom of his own. So he gathered his band and lead them north from the killing fields of Rome, in order to take the city of Paris. Outside the gates of the city however, he met a holyman who brought his life and his plans to their final end. Or so everyone thought.
So how do I feel about my ‘ancestor’, you ask? Well, I can’t think of anyone that I’d rather be.
