Darius smiled warmly as he stood in the doorway of the church, shaking hands and saying a few words to members of the congregation as they headed out into the world after the service. He made sure that each and every person that walked out the door was acknowledged, from the oldest, to the youngest. It had been his habit to do so for as long as he had held services at St. Julien’s.

However, one young boy simply couldn’t seem to contain himself, and walked up to the priest, tugging gently on his robes to get his attention. “Father Darius?”

Darius looked down to see who had spoken, then crouched a bit so he was at eye level with the young man. “Yes, Robert?”

The boy seemed suddenly shy, as he held out a piece of paper that he had made in bible study that morning. “Made this for you.” Then the child quickly darted away, through the legs of the parishioners and out the door.

Darius slowly stood, looking at the paper with a soft smile. It was a child’s drawing of a building, with a cross sticking out of the roof. Standing beside the building were two smiling stick figures, one big, and one small. Above all of this were a bunch of little stars like those teachers would put on a child’s paper for doing good work, and scrawled in a child’s messy hand were the words ‘favorite old person’.

It was an award that Darius cherished for many years.
