Darius had to shake his head when he saw the young immortal heating water in a cup in the microwave. He had asked her to make some tea, but it was obvious she had not been brought up on the proper way to prepare the drink. Taking her aside, he showed her the teapot, and told her about how it was important to boil the water traditionally, and to seep fresh ingredients in order to bring out the fullness of the flavors, rather than the bags many used these days. It took longer, but the results were worth the effort.

Cody had more patience than most people her age, and Darius took great pleasure in showing her the various strategies involved in the game of chess. She was intelligent, and took well to the game, seeming to know intuitively how to look ahead and deduce what moves would work to her advantage. Given enough time, Darius knew that she would be an excellent strategist, although she was just a bit to cautious now, preferring to be defensive rather then offensive in her movements. He made note to show her that playing both sides well was the key to the game.

“Why do you stay confined to one place? Aren’t you afraid that people will think you’re a coward?”

“There is a difference between being a coward, and taking a stand for something that you believe in. I don’t stay here because I am afraid to fight. I stay here because I have no wish to fight. The difference is one that some to not see, but as long as we know the difference ourselves, then it does not matters what others believe.”

“What if someone did wrong against you?”

“Then I would forgive them, and hope they saw the light.”

“It is simply another form of music, and has been around in one form or another for at least three thousand years.”

“I can’t even understand what they’re saying.”

“That is because it is in Latin, as it does not translate well into English. Besides, I have heard some of the things that are considered to be music these days, and frankly I cannot understand most of that either.”

“That’s because you’re old.”

“Actually, I believe it is because the instruments interfere with the words, which is why I prefer the chants.”

“Isn’t that what I said?”

“What if someone tells you something that they did that hurt someone else? Would you still have to keep it to yourself?”

“Yes, because that is what it means to give confession. It allows people to speak freely of the wrongs they have committed without having to fear the retribution of man.”

“Even if they killed someone?”

“Even then.”

“That’s just stupid.”

“Difficult, yes, but not stupid. If I were to tell just one person’s secrets, then I would lose the trust of all. Then I would be of little help to those who have but small wrongs to confess.”
