ynez_castillo ~ Five Times Darius And Ynez Avoided Being Ho
Aug. 21st, 2007 09:37 am“So, what do you think?”
Darius would be the first to admit that he didn’t know much about the fashion world, but the shirt she was holding up was a color that he would normally associate with someone of the female persuasion. However, she seemed so excited about it that he simply could not tell her that it was not something he would choose to wear himself, having always been more of a neutral person. Perhaps she would not notice if he didn’t choose to wear it all that often. “It’s a very interesting color.”
“Real men wear pink, Darius.”
~~~~~
They were more careful around each other since her arrival in Rome, when he had unintentionally reminded her of the altercation that they had at St. Julien’s the previous holiday season. On the outside nothing seemed to have changed between them, and she didn’t flinch or anything when they touched. However, there was a certain wariness around her eyes sometimes when she thought he wasn’t watching, as though she was waiting for him to turn on her again like he had done that night.
Neither of them ever brought it up, but it was always there just under the surface.
~~~~~
They had been shoe shopping all day, with many breaks at various Cafés along the way for Ynez to rest her hip. She had explained to him that there were different kinds of shoes for different functions, different seasons, different kinds of outfits, and that a woman couldn’t be seen wearing the same pair of shoes twice to any important public functions. Frankly, it all seemed a bit excessive to a man who had spent over a millennia wearing one kind of shoe for everything.
“Just one more stop, I promise.”
“Nonsense Ynez, take all the time that you need.”
~~~~~
Darius would watch her sometimes, when she was lost in her own thoughts and unaware that he was nearby. There was something about her that made him want to get to know her better. It was why he had invited her to see Rome with him in the first place. She called to him in a way that nobody ever really had in all the years that he could recall.
Now, when he had laid aside the claustrophobic confines of the church, he could admit to himself that it had been there almost from the first time they had met.
~~~~~
It was a matter of too many cooks spoiling the broth really, as each of them would add things to the pot according to their tastes, while the other wasn’t looking.
They ate quietly, one mouthful at a time, neither of them saying much of anything. Between bites, they would each take a rather large drink of water, and then continue on with the meal. They didn’t acknowledge that the amount of spice in the dish was not only excessive, but was liable to give them problems later on, they simply continued with the meal as though nothing was wrong.
