We all strive to make believable characters. What have you done as a mun to write your character believably? Do you think you have successfully pulled this off? How do you as a writer keep your character balanced and believable?

Writing believable characters is one of the hardest things about being a writer, or at least it is for me. Even with a character like Darius, who I ‘borrowed’ from other writers, it would be very easy for me to let him become one-dimensional. Perhaps it could even be more so, given his particular personality and beliefs in the series.

Darius’ way of looking at the world can oftentimes make him seem far too perfect in many ways. Even though they gave some brief mentions of his life as the General in the series, they never really explored that darker half of Darius’ life and showed how that impacted him in the present. It almost made it seem as though he had no real internal struggles and faults like everyone else.

Therefore, my goal with him has been to show that he is just as human as the next person. He had faults and fears just like everyone else. He puts his robes on one arm at a time just like the next, guy that wears robes. Impure thoughts? He has them. Guilt over things he could have done differently? They are there, just under the surface. He’s just a man with some different ways of looking at the world around him.

This was also the reason I changed him back to his old barbarian self over the past year. I wanted to give myself the chance to try and see him in that light, as well as allowing those interesting in reading him that same chance. I thought this would help people to see that he really did have that darker side to his personality, despite what the light quickening had done to him.

The fact that Darius fell for Ynez in the last several months is another way that I now plan on adding to his believability. He fell in love, and now he will have to find a way to make that work with his life. There will have to be some changes made, and I plan to approach that just like anyone would have to in real life. There will be some friction and some problems, and he may get frustrated at times because he isn’t perfect. Despite all the patience he’s developed over the years, love has a way of making even the most patient person in the world lose it all in the space of an instant.

So right now I’m just kind of taking it one day at a time, and trying to keep his canon personality in line with the changes that have come in his rp life. I only hope that I can continue to bring a sense of depth and believability to his character, while still keeping to the essence of the person Darius was in the series.

I haven't read through everything here but what I have read, looks like you know Darius pretty well. I always thought (maybe hoped) that had the actor not passed away so suddenly there would have been so much more to Darius on the series.

In some ways I think they explored those issues with Methos, being someone so old, seeing humanity in different stages and settings they had to evolve and adapt to fit the times. Good, bad, right, wrong...at times they both ended up being a bit of all of those things.

*nods* If Werner Stocker hadn't died, then they had plans to use Darius in flashbacks, similar to what they did with Hugh Fitzcairn after his death in the series. It's really to bad that didn't happen, although they did explore it a bit in one of the books.

Methos was definitely used to explore the duality issues that they couldn't do with Darius. I liked how they made him very different from Darius though, and yet still managed to show how the same person could change so much over the passage of time.
